ARCH OF SOLDIERS AND SAILORS
This arch is nothing more than a monument to the Americans who fought on the side of the North during the Civil War. It is located on the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn , and it looks very solemn and patriotic. The civil war in the period 1861-1865 left a strong mark on the memory of the nation. It was then that slavery fell, and the formation of a modern society opened before a great country. Then, about 750 thousand Americans died on the fronts of the Civil War.
The marble arch at Grand Army Plaza was erected in memory of the sailors and soldiers who defended the unity of the United States. The arch was designed on the model of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris by the architect John Hemingway Duncan .
It is interesting that the first stone in the buildings was laid by the great war hero -General William Tecumseh Sherman .
The arch was opened in 1892 by US President Stephen Grover Cleveland .
Initially, she had a rather modest appearance. It was decorated with only 2 bas-reliefs with the figures of President Abraham Lincoln, as well as General Ulysses Grant. Later, monumental sculptural groups were added here.

A bronze quadriga was placed at the top of the arch, which entails a chariot with Columbia, which traditionally symbolizes the United States, and 2 angels announce her arrival.
Also, such compositions as " Spirit of the Navy " and " Spirit of the Army " were installed on the supports. But approaching this arch is not so easy: Grand Army Plaza is one of the largest transport interchanges in Brooklyn.
But if you have a little patience, you will definitely see a patriotic arch close by.
